TL;DR
Fall 2026 Mechanical Engineering Internship/Co-op - Austin, TX (CAD/Manufacturing): Designing and refining mechanical hardware and manufacturing processes for advanced microreactors with an accent on 3-D CAD, detailed drawings, GD&T, and quality standards. Focus on collecting production data, performing root-cause analysis of non-conformances, and implementing corrective actions in an on-site shop environment.

Location: Full-time, on-site in Austin, Texas, for at least 12 consecutive weeks. The internship term is expected to run from September through December; candidates must provide their own housing and daily transportation.

hirify.global Atomics develops factory-fabricated microreactors for affordable, scalable, and reliable nuclear power, including the 10 MWe hirify.global-1 reactor.

What you will do

  • Design, build, and update 3-D CAD models, detailed drawings, and GD&T documentation.
  • Draft work instructions, router steps, and inspection plans aligned with ASME and internal quality standards.
  • Collect production data and perform root-cause analysis on manufacturing non-conformances.
  • Recommend corrective actions and present quantified findings to engineering leadership.
  • Own a clearly scoped project from concept through implementation during a 12–16-week term.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a B.S. or M.S. program in Mechanical, Aerospace, Manufacturing Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • At least 3 months of hands-on engineering experience through coursework, research, internships, student shops, or personal projects.
  • Working knowledge of CAD/CAM and basic structural or thermal analysis.
  • Ability to work full-time on-site in Austin, Texas for at least 12 consecutive weeks.
  • Ability to stand, climb ladders, and lift up to 25 lbs while wearing PPE.

Nice to have

  • GPA of 3.4 or higher and completion of a manufacturing laboratory or capstone design course.
  • At least 6 months of experience applying GD&T.
  • Familiarity with ISO, AS standards, or comparable quality codes.
  • Experience collaborating with technicians in a fast-paced shop environment.
