Staff Software Engineer (Data)

Location: Sunnyvale, California. Hybrid work with a minimum of 60% or 24 hours of each work week on-site; Tuesdays and Thursdays are encouraged on-site days. Menlo Park offices may be used during the interview process.

What you will do

• Design and implement production-grade systems that transform raw clinical, laboratory, and operational data into reliable, analysis-ready datasets.
• Build services, libraries, data models, and workflow components that enforce data integrity, access control, and compliance by design.
• Work with scientists, clinicians, laboratory operations, and data teams to understand data generation, transformation, and usage needs.
• Address schema evolution, blinding, consent, privacy, data quality, testing, monitoring, and operational excellence.
• Lead engineering efforts for long-lived systems supporting active clinical and research programs.
• Mentor engineers, contribute to documentation and onboarding, and participate in production incident investigations related to data quality or availability.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience building production-grade software systems.
• Strong foundations in system design, data modeling, API design, and well-tested production code.
• Experience building and operating data-intensive software systems beyond declarative or SQL-only pipelines.
• Proficiency in Go, Python, or a similar general-purpose programming language.
• Experience with data modeling, validation, and transforming real-world data into usable formats.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, bioinformatics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to have

• Experience in regulated or clinical data environments, including HIPAA, CLIA, GCP, or FDA compliance.
• Experience supporting scientific teams or designing laboratory and bioinformatics data systems.
• Familiarity with GxP practices, regulatory reporting, sample tracking, data sequestration, permissioning, or privacy controls.
• Experience in biotech, diagnostics, or life sciences, and experience building reusable libraries or shared tooling.
• Advanced degree in computer science, engineering, bioinformatics, or a related discipline.
