Staff Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid in San Francisco, California; R&D roles require two days per week in the San Francisco office.

What you will do

• Own the design and evolution of the core data model, including domain entities, actions, and audit trails.
• Build the data layer used by AI agents to read and write operational context while supporting healthcare compliance.
• Structure, version, and query domain knowledge as the platform evolves.
• Establish data contracts and APIs for feature teams.
• Drive platform reliability, performance, and scalability as customer and traffic volumes grow.
• Set technical direction for the data platform with product and engineering leads.

Requirements

• 12+ years of professional software engineering experience in backend or data infrastructure.
• Deep expertise in relational databases, including schema design, query performance, and data modeling trade-offs.
• Experience designing and evolving data models in complex, growing production systems.
• Hands-on backend development experience; the environment is primarily Python.
• Production-scale operations experience, including incident response, observability, testing, reliability, and data integrity.
• Ability to make architectural decisions while domain and product requirements evolve alongside AI capabilities.

Nice to have

• Experience in healthcare, fintech, or other compliance-heavy infrastructure.
• Background at high-throughput infrastructure companies.
• Practical understanding of applied AI systems.
• Comfort with customer-facing technical discussions.
