What you will do

• Lead the operation, optimisation, calibration, and characterisation of ion-trap quantum computing hardware.
• Develop and improve experimental methods for quantum measurement, quantum control, and system performance.
• Apply AMO physics to laser cooling, trapping, state preparation, quantum control, and detection.
• Build theoretical models and simulations to interpret system behaviour and guide experiments and technical decisions.
• Work across physics and engineering teams to define requirements and solve system-level problems.
• Mentor scientists and engineers in experimental methods, data analysis, and technical decision-making.

Requirements

• PhD in AMO physics or a closely related field; postdoctoral experience is desirable.
• 7+ years of experience, including PhD time, calibrating, characterising, and operating experiments for quantum technologies.
• Experience leading projects in quantum measurement, quantum control, or experimental quantum systems.
• Hands-on expertise with laser systems, optics, microwave and RF control, and high-precision imaging systems.
• Strong experimental design, modelling, simulation, problem-solving, technical judgement, and project ownership skills.
• Ability to collaborate across physics and engineering teams and communicate complex technical topics clearly.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of surface ion-trap systems.
• Experience with Ytterbium or Barium ion-qubit systems.
• Strong Python skills for experimental control, data analysis, simulation, or automation.
• Experience mentoring junior scientists, PhD students, or engineers.
• Experience developing experimental procedures, technical documentation, or system-level test plans.
