TL;DR
Neutral Atom Systems Architect (Quantum Computing): Defining and architecting quantum networking systems for distributed quantum computing with neutral atoms with an accent on hardware interfaces, high-fidelity entanglement, and fault-tolerant system requirements. Focus on modelling networking protocols under experimental constraints, specifying neutral-atom hardware performance, and aligning quantum architecture across research, product, and engineering teams.

Location: Cambridge, England, United Kingdom; Workplace: On-site

Company

hirify.global commercialises quantum information research from the Cavendish Laboratory and develops scalable quantum networking infrastructure using quantum photonic technology.

What you will do

  • Define, decompose, and maintain the network system architecture and subsystem specifications for neutral-atom quantum systems.
  • Lead the technical vision for neutral-atom hardware architecture, qubit control, optical systems, gate optimisation, and system performance.
  • Model high-fidelity remote entanglement generation and quantum networking protocols under realistic experimental constraints.
  • Collaborate with quantum error correction researchers to define requirements for distributed fault-tolerant quantum computing.
  • Partner with Product Management and Engineering on product specifications, concepts of operation, technology roadmaps, and technical decisions.
  • Coordinate technical project scoping, resource planning, external partnerships, and representation at scientific and industry events.

Requirements

  • Postgraduate qualification in Physics; a PhD is preferred, with applications to neutral-atom quantum computing.
  • Deep expertise in designing and operating neutral-atom quantum processing units, including Rydberg-mediated entangling gates and error optimisation.
  • Strong knowledge of laser physics, optical engineering, optical trapping, beam delivery, laser stabilisation, quantum control, and calibration.
  • Experience modelling open quantum systems with QuTiP, Mathematica, MATLAB, Python, or equivalent tools.
  • Experience leading technical projects, making architectural decisions, managing technical delivery, and planning budgets.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, data management, and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of photonic interfaces between neutral atoms and quantum networks.
  • Understanding of distributed quantum computing architectures, quantum networking protocols, quantum error correction, and fault-tolerant architectures.
  • Industry experience.

Culture & Benefits

  • Inclusive and collaborative environment focused on scientific integrity, diversity, and innovation.
  • Flexible working options alongside an on-site role.
  • Private medical and dental cover, group death-in-service cover, and enhanced paid family leave.
  • 28 days of annual leave including a company shutdown period, UK public holidays, and the option to purchase additional leave.
  • Paid sabbatical after four years, employee referral scheme, on-site gym membership, cycle scheme, office refreshments, and access to Cambridge Botanical Gardens.
