What you will do

  • Operate ion-trap quantum computing hardware and perform calibration, optimisation, and characterisation procedures.
  • Develop quantum control protocols for ion shuttling and quantum gates.
  • Build theoretical models and simulations to compare experimental measurements with predicted quantum dynamics.
  • Design, improve, and support new experimental concepts and technologies for future quantum computing products.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, electrical engineers, physicists, and quantum engineers on complex technical problems.

Requirements

  • PhD in AMO physics or a closely related field; postdoctoral experience is highly desirable.
  • 5+ years of degree-inclusive experience calibrating, characterising, and operating experiments for quantum technologies.
  • Strong experimental AMO physics experience, particularly in laser cooling and trapping and/or ion-trap or neutral-atom quantum control.
  • Experience designing, building, and improving complex experimental systems, demonstrated through publications and/or hands-on work.
  • Strong modelling and simulation skills for guiding experiments, interpreting results, and optimising system performance.
  • Hands-on experience with laser systems, optics, microwave and RF control, and high-precision imaging systems, plus experience leading a relevant quantum measurement or control project.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with surface ion traps and their operation.
  • Experience with ytterbium or barium ion-qubit systems.
  • Strong Python skills applied to experimental control, data analysis, simulation, or automation.
