TL;DR
Senior Ground Systems Engineer (Cryogenics & Industrial Gases) (Aerospace): Designing, installing, commissioning, operating, and maintaining cryogenic tank farms, gas distribution systems, pressure controls, and instrumentation for spacecraft manufacturing, testing, and launch operations with an accent on thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and process engineering. Focus on developing reliable ground support infrastructure, troubleshooting high-pressure and cryogenic systems, commissioning expansions, and ensuring compliance with ASME, NFPA, CGA, and OSHA standards.

Location: Redondo Beach, United States; onsite

Salary: $140,000–$180,000 per year, plus potential stock options and benefits.

What you will do

  • Own the design, installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and improvement of industrial gas and cryogenic fluid systems across the campus.
  • Develop and maintain cryogenic tank farms, gas distribution systems, pressure control systems, instrumentation, and associated process equipment.
  • Apply thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and controls to create safe, reliable, and scalable ground support infrastructure.
  • Prepare system specifications, P&IDs, operating procedures, preventive maintenance plans, and engineering documentation.
  • Troubleshoot cryogenic fluids, high-pressure gases, valves, instrumentation, controls, and process equipment.
  • Coordinate with Test, Manufacturing, Avionics, Facilities, Environmental Health & Safety, suppliers, vendors, and contractors on operations and expansion projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience designing, operating, or maintaining industrial gas or cryogenic fluid systems.
  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and process engineering fundamentals.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with cryogenic fluid systems in an industrial or aerospace environment.
  • Experience with high-pressure systems, pressure vessels, vacuum-jacketed piping, hazardous gases, P&IDs, instrumentation, PLCs, or process controls.
  • Applicants must be U.S. Persons or eligible to obtain an export license under applicable U.S. export regulations, including ITAR and EAR.

Nice to have

  • Experience with liquid nitrogen, liquid oxygen, helium, methane, hydrogen, or other cryogenic fluids.
  • Experience with CAD for equipment layouts and system design; Siemens NX is preferred.
  • Experience commissioning and operating mission-critical utility or ground support systems.
  • Working knowledge of ASME, NFPA, CGA, and OSHA standards.
