Mechanical Engineer (Robotics)

Location: South San Francisco, United States; on-site. Travel to active field sites is required approximately 15–25% of the time.

What you will do

• Integrate robotic arms and payloads with skid-steer and tracked vehicle platforms, including structural mounting, load paths, power and data routing, and service access.
• Design heavy-duty mounts, brackets, enclosures, actuators, end-effectors, cable assemblies, and wire harnesses for continuous outdoor construction use.
• Architect reconfigurable platforms that support different end-effectors, payloads, and construction workflows.
• Develop environmental protection strategies including IP67 enclosures, gasketing, connector selection, thermal management, and ingress protection.
• Integrate cameras, LiDAR, IMUs, work lights, and indicators while addressing field of view, vibration isolation, cleanability, and serviceability.
• Drive DFM, DFA, and DFS, perform hand calculations and FEA, own validation testing, release drawings, manage ECOs, and diagnose field failures.

Requirements

• 3+ years of hands-on mechanical engineering experience in robotics, autonomous systems, heavy equipment, or a related field.
• Experience integrating robotic arms, actuators, or heavy payloads onto mobile platforms such as skid-steers, tracked vehicles, AGVs, or off-road equipment.
• Experience designing to IP67 or stricter standards and deploying systems in rain, snow, sub-zero cold, heat, dust, and mud.
• Strong cable and harness design experience, including connectors, harness diagrams, strain relief, chafe protection, and field debugging.
• Expert CAD proficiency with Onshape or SolidWorks, plus GD&T, tolerance stacks, and production-quality drawings.
• Experience with structural analysis, weldments, bearings, FEA, validation planning, suppliers, and the transition from prototypes to low-volume production.

Nice to have

• Experience with construction, agricultural, mining, or defense ground vehicles.
• Experience designing platforms for multiple end-effectors, payloads, or task configurations.
• Experience integrating perception systems, including cameras, LiDAR fixtures, and sensor cleaning systems.
• Familiarity with hydraulics, pneumatics, or high-current DC power distribution.
• Experience with castings, weldments, large machined parts, or desert and northern-climate deployments.
