Lead Software Engineer (Payment Platform)

Location: San Jose, United States. Hybrid work is generally expected in the office Monday through Thursday, with Fridays generally flexible for remote work.

Salary: $400,000–$500,000 annual salary for California, plus eligibility for health insurance, equity awards, life insurance, disability benefits, parental leave, wellness benefits, and paid time off.

What you will do

• Rebuild and scale the hirify.global Pay pricing, billing, and payments platform for domestic and international markets.
• Build platform features and shared architectural layers, including queuing, event systems, shared memory clusters, and reusable libraries.
• Use agentic AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, and Copilot to implement, review, refine, and integrate production code.
• Evaluate emerging technologies, lead design adoption, and influence technical roadmaps across multiple engineering teams.
• Review technical specifications, participate in code and design reviews, and mentor engineers while spending approximately 70% of the time writing code.
• Champion engineering best practices, platform innovation, reuse, and collaboration across development, QA, and infrastructure/operations.

Requirements

• 15+ years of experience with large-scale backend services, payment system architecture, implementation, or related professional industry experience.
• Required hands-on experience with AI-assisted and agentic coding tools, including delegating, reviewing, and integrating AI-generated code in production.
• Strong expertise in payments and billing systems, including payment processing, card tokenization, payment gateways, token vaults, and synchronous/asynchronous and online/offline flows.
• Experience with compliance standards such as SOX, PCI, and 3DS, plus complex transactional system design.
• Strong architectural experience building highly available and scalable payment platforms, with AWS or GCP expertise required.
• Strong experience building and adopting CI/CD pipelines; RFP and third-party vendor evaluation experience is required.

• Experience with multi-cloud solutions and guiding application design, deployment, and scaling across multiple cloud environments.
