Shielding Analysis Engineer (Nuclear)

Location: Santa Clara, California, or remote within the United States. Remote employees travel to the Santa Clara headquarters twice per quarter based on business or team needs, and must work onsite there during the first two weeks of onboarding. U.S. person eligibility may be required under U.S. export control laws.

Salary: $102,000–$225,000 per year.

What you will do

• Define, develop, and execute radiation shielding and radiation transport analyses supporting reactor design, plant layout, performance evaluation, and safety assurance.
• Develop source-term, activation, streaming, skyshine, dose-rate, and shielding models using Monte Carlo and deterministic methods.
• Perform calculations with MCNP, SCALE, OpenMC, Serpent, and supporting radiation transport codes.
• Support verification, qualification, and validation of shielding analyses against experiments, benchmarks, and operational radiation measurements.
• Provide technical feedback to rapidly iterating design teams and contribute to licensing and regulatory interactions.
• Document analyses and prepare clear, technically defensible reports.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD in a technical field such as nuclear engineering, with experience in reactor design, radiation transport, shielding analysis, or radiation protection.
• Fluency with Python and proficiency with high-performance computing systems.
• Experience with fast-reactor design, shielding design, or radiation protection analysis.
• Proficiency with radiation transport tools including MCNP, SCALE, OpenMC, and Serpent.
• Knowledge of variance-reduction techniques such as weight windows, surface source read/write, source biasing, and CADIS/FW-CADIS.
• U.S. person eligibility may be required because the role may involve U.S. export-controlled information.

Nice to have

• Experience with source-term generation, activation, dose-rate calculations, and shielding design methods.
• Proficiency with CAD software such as SolidWorks.
• Knowledge of international fast-reactor design, shielding benchmarks, and related experiments.
