Electrical Engineer (Fusion Energy): Governing electrical safety across an advanced fusion-energy and HTS technology site with an accent on low- and high-voltage safety, statutory compliance, and authorised-person frameworks. Focus on auditing safe systems of work, investigating electrical incidents, developing practical safety controls, and advising leadership as the technical authority.

Location: Abingdon, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom. Hybrid working is available with a minimum 60% onsite and 40% home-working split.

What you will do

  • Own and audit the application of the Low Voltage Electrical Safety Policy and safe systems of work.
  • Provide independent assurance on compliance with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, BS 7671, and applicable design standards.
  • Maintain the authorisation framework and records for personnel and contractors carrying out electrical work.
  • Define training and reassessment requirements, and deliver technical briefings, toolbox talks, and practical guidance.
  • Lead electrical incident and near-miss investigations, identifying root causes and systemic improvements.
  • Act as the technical authority for electrical safety and contribute to high-voltage safety policy and practice.

Requirements

  • Degree, HNC, or HND in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Recognised Authorising Engineer training and/or experience as an SAP (LV).
  • Proven experience managing electrical safe working practices in complex industrial or scientific environments.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and practical implementation experience of EAWR 1989 and BS 7671, plus applicable design standards and codes.
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills, with the confidence to challenge unsafe practices and engage technicians, engineers, contractors, and senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to work onsite in Abingdon for at least 60% of working time.

Nice to have

  • Experience with electrical-work authorisation frameworks and HV safety management.
  • Experience with LV/HV power-system protection, commissioning, testing, and operation.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or equivalent CAD software.
  • Familiarity with specialist power-systems equipment used in the fusion industry.
