TL;DR
Senior Quantum Computational Materials Scientist (Quantum Algorithms/Materials Science): Conducting theoretical and applied research on quantum computing algorithms for materials modelling, simulation, and discovery with an accent on algorithm design, optimization, implementation, and resource analysis. Focus on benchmarking classical and quantum simulations, developing research directions, coordinating US materials collaborations, and producing publications, patents, and grant applications.

Location: Washington, District of Columbia, United States; Workplace: Hybrid

Annual compensation: $120,000–$175,000, depending on experience.

What you will do

  • Conduct theoretical and applied research on near-term quantum computing algorithms, applications, and enabling theoretical technologies.
  • Guide and coordinate materials research efforts in the US in collaboration with the Head of the US office and the materials team lead.
  • Develop research on algorithm design, optimization, implementation, resource analysis, and classical and quantum simulation benchmarking.
  • Deliver publications, presentations, patent applications, and other research outputs.
  • Coordinate interactions with stakeholders on US-based collaborations involving quantum computing for materials simulation and discovery.
  • Contribute to new research directions and collaborative scientific work across the international team.

Requirements

  • Expertise in applied and theoretical computational materials science or a closely related field.
  • PhD in ab initio electronic structure methods, theory and computation, chemistry, physics, materials science, or a closely related discipline.
  • Independent research experience with a strong publication track record.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to lead research efforts and independently write effective grant applications.
  • Interest in near-term quantum computing and flexibility to work across different aspects of quantum algorithms.

Nice to have

  • Experience in materials discovery and machine learning methods for improving workflows.
  • Experience with DFT++ approaches such as DMFT, DMET, or GW.
  • Experience with high-throughput materials screening applications.
  • Experience leading complex collaborative research projects or growing a team of scientists.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and novel research.
