Staff Software Engineer (Data Engineering)

Location: Hybrid in Seattle, Washington, with preference for candidates within commuting distance of offices in San Francisco, Seattle, or New York City

Salary: $240,000–$260,000 annual base salary, excluding equity and benefits

What you will do

• Set the technical direction and architect the data ingestion and normalization platform for ad networks, Fivetran connectors, and customer warehouses.
• Design systems for schema evolution, data contracts, data quality, idempotent backfills, lineage, time-travel, reproducibility, and pipeline observability.
• Lead architectural decisions across the GCP, BigQuery, and dbt stack, including build-versus-buy decisions and platform standardization.
• Translate data science and research needs into reliable pipeline contracts and SLAs.
• Raise engineering standards through design reviews, code reviews, mentorship, and technical leadership across multiple workstreams.
• Own incident response and post-mortems for critical pipeline failures and drive AI Agent workflows for data quality and analytics.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 4 years building production data platforms at meaningful scale.
• Staff-level technical leadership experience, including setting direction, writing design documents, and mentoring senior engineers.
• Deep expertise in Python and SQL/dbt, plus fluency with a modern orchestrator such as Dagster, Airflow, or Temporal.
• Strong experience with cloud data warehouses such as BigQuery or Snowflake and ownership of data platform architecture, quality, lineage, cost, and reliability.
• Strong product judgment and the ability to work with data science, machine learning, analytics, product, and executive stakeholders.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice to have

• Experience contributing to or maintaining open-source data tooling such as Apache Spark, Apache Beam, or Apache Iceberg.
• Experience building AI Agents in a data platform setting.
