Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid in New York City or San Francisco, United States

Salary: $180K–$260K annually, plus equity

What you will do

• Design and implement scalable backend services, data pipelines, and APIs.
• Build infrastructure for high-throughput, low-latency AI and machine learning workflows.
• Set up, manage, and optimize SQL and NoSQL databases, including schemas, replication, indexing, and performance.
• Improve performance, reliability, security, observability, logging, tracing, and monitoring.
• Collaborate with research and infrastructure teams to support rapid experimentation.
• Contribute through code reviews, mentorship, and engineering practices.

Requirements

• 3+ years of experience building distributed systems or high-availability backends.
• Strong Python skills and proficiency in at least one systems language such as Go, Rust, or C++.
• Experience with cloud platforms, Docker, Kubernetes, and container orchestration.
• Experience setting up, managing, and optimizing SQL or NoSQL databases.
• Strong focus on code quality, correctness, performance, maintainability, and structure.
• Ability to use modern AI coding tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or Codex effectively.

Nice to have

• Experience integrating agentic AI workflows into backend systems using tools such as LangChain, LangGraph, Semantic Kernel, Haystack, or custom frameworks.
• Familiarity with persistence and checkpointing, streaming pipelines, and vector or knowledge store integrations.
