Founding Forward Deployed Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid in San Francisco or New York City, with three days per week in the office; up to 50% travel and relocation assistance available.

Salary: $170,000–$400,000 per year plus equity.

What you will do

• Lead high-stakes customer engagements and own technical and business outcomes from problem definition through resolution.
• Define deployment strategies, operating models, and reusable deployment primitives for fast, safe execution.
• Build tools and playbooks that codify successful deployment patterns and increase customer impact.
• Operate as a player-coach, set a high execution standard, and help grow the team through direct feedback.
• Identify product, customer-environment, and delivery signals and escalate them with urgency.
• Partner with OpenAI’s Product and Research functions to translate field experience into roadmap priorities and new exploration.

Requirements

• 4+ years of engineering or technical delivery experience.
• Experience building reusable capabilities from 0 to 1 under ambiguity and making disciplined standardization-versus-customization decisions.
• Experience leading high-pressure technical projects from prototype to production.
• Ability to write and review production-grade code across frontend and backend using JavaScript or Python.
• Ability to make fast, sound decisions, simplify complex work, and operate with urgency in evolving environments.
• Ability to elevate team performance and build trust through clarity, calm, focus, and sound judgment.
