TL;DR
Motor Designer (Robotics): Designing custom electric motors for industrial robots, from electromagnetic architecture and simulation through prototyping, manufacturing, and dynamometer testing with an accent on torque density, compact packaging, and manufacturability. Focus on correlating 2D/3D FEA with measured performance, optimizing winding and magnetic designs, and integrating motors into complete actuator and robot systems.

Location: Palo Alto, United States; on-site

Company

hirify.global develops Physical AI and robotics for real-world industrial deployment, beginning with factory-floor applications.

What you will do

  • Design novel electric motor architectures, including BLDC, PMSM, axial-flux, slotless, and coreless topologies, optimized for torque density and compact packaging.
  • Perform 2D/3D electromagnetic FEA and analyze torque, efficiency, thermal behavior, cogging, back-EMF, and losses.
  • Lead the design loop from concept through prototype, covering windings, magnets, stator and rotor geometry, laminations, and air gaps.
  • Create mechanical CAD designs or collaborate with mechanical engineers and suppliers to deliver manufacturable motor assemblies.
  • Specify and review motor components, drawings, tolerances, materials, and manufacturing capabilities with external vendors.
  • Define dynamometer and characterization testing, correlate simulations with measurements, and integrate the motor with controls, firmware, actuators, and robot systems.

Requirements

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong electromagnetic simulation skills with Ansys Maxwell, Motor-CAD, or equivalent tools, including 2D/3D FEA and parametric studies.
  • Deep knowledge of electric machine fundamentals, torque production, winding design, magnetic materials, losses, thermal limits, and control interactions.
  • Experience taking at least one custom motor from concept through prototype and testing.
  • Either proficiency in mechanical CAD such as CATIA or NX, or demonstrated experience partnering with suppliers and mechanical engineers on manufacturable motor assemblies.

Culture & Benefits

  • Hands-on work across simulation, prototyping, and physical bench testing.
  • High ownership over motor designs used in industrial robots.
  • Cross-functional collaboration across hardware, controls, firmware, mechanical integration, manufacturing, and suppliers.
