TL;DR
Materials Engineer (Creep & High Temp Metallics Design) (Nuclear Reactor Materials): Developing and qualifying metallic alloys, graphite, composites, and welding materials for high-temperature nuclear reactor systems with an accent on metallurgical analysis, materials testing, and lifetime performance. Focus on constitutive material models, creep-fatigue and structural integrity evaluations, degradation behavior, and verification and validation of engineering tools.

Location: Rockville, Maryland, United States; 4 days in office. Standard schedule is 8:00am–5:00pm ET, Monday–Friday. Travel is up to 10% as needed.

Salary: $110,000–$135,000 per year base salary.

What you will do

  • Develop methodologies to qualify and characterize metallic alloys, graphite, composites, and welding materials for high-temperature nuclear reactor applications.
  • Select materials, test methods, codes, standards, and prepare material specifications for component procurement.
  • Plan and oversee materials testing programs to establish material properties and qualification bases.
  • Analyze microscale behavior, degradation, environmental effects, tribology, and lifetime performance using simulations, calculations, and engineering judgment.
  • Perform metallurgical analysis and support structural integrity, creep-fatigue, and strain evaluations for reactor systems and components.
  • Prepare design documentation, technical reports, calculations, drawings, V&V plans, and independent reviews in accordance with quality and configuration-management procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in materials engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Typically five years of engineering experience required; a relevant master’s or Ph.D. may substitute for part of the experience requirement.
  • Experience with metallurgical analysis and strong familiarity with metallic alloy material behavior.
  • Ability to work in the Rockville office four days per week and follow the standard Eastern Time office schedule.
