Materials Engineer | NPI Engineering (Aerospace) (Advanced Materials and Processes): Leading the development and production transition of new materials and manufacturing processes for electric aircraft, propulsion systems, generators, and high-voltage batteries with an accent on NPI, experimentation, and production scalability. Focus on building and testing proof-of-concept prototypes, evaluating materials through laboratory techniques, reducing costs, and scaling technologies toward low- and full-rate production.

Location: South Burlington, Vermont, United States

Salary: $100,000–$140,000 USD per year

What you will do

  • Lead materials and process development projects from concept through technology readiness level 7.
  • Research, experiment with, and evaluate candidate materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Build and test proof-of-concept prototypes to support technology development proposals.
  • Collaborate with design, manufacturing, production, and supply chain teams on cost reduction, performance improvement, scalability, and make-versus-buy strategies.
  • Support selection of manufacturing equipment and transition ownership of developed technologies to production teams.
  • Prepare development proposals covering business needs, plans, risks, costs, and return on investment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in materials engineering or another engineering field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, or high-rate production, with a strong background in new product introduction.
  • Experience with materials and processes such as metals, ceramics, polymers, composites, filament winding, automated fiber placement, molding, casting, welding, coating, electroplating, forging, stamping, or metal additive manufacturing.
  • Experience scaling production, integrating new products, and driving cost reduction.
  • Experience with materials laboratory techniques including optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis.
  • Ability to write detailed technical reports, communicate findings, use analytics for process improvements, and persist through repeated project failures.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with FAA Part 21 production requirements and quality systems.
