TL;DR
Materials Engineer (New Grad December 2026) (Metal 3D Printing): Supporting materials testing infrastructure and process improvements for advanced metal 3D printing with an accent on metals characterization, quality metrics, and material property analysis. Focus on operating laboratory equipment, interpreting materials data, connecting findings to upstream printing processes, and automating measurement procedures.

Location: Los Angeles, California; full-time onsite presence in Hawthorne five days a week

Salary: $95,000–$120,000 per year, dependent on academic level and relevant experience

What you will do

  • Support materials and process infrastructure, best practices, and testing procedures for advanced metal 3D printing.
  • Operate laboratory equipment to measure tensile strength, surface roughness, microstructure, and other material properties.
  • Generate, track, analyze, and present quality metrics for printed customer parts, including dimensional accuracy and defect distribution.
  • Connect materials findings to upstream printing process improvements, including training machine learning models.
  • Optimize and automate materials and process procedures to reduce manual work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Hands-on laboratory or coursework experience with metals characterization, processing, or sample preparation.
  • Experience with techniques such as cutting, grinding, polishing, acid etching, and optical microscopy.
  • Strong understanding of materials engineering fundamentals and a first-principles approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to work onsite full-time in Hawthorne, five days per week.

Nice to have

  • Master’s or PhD in a relevant engineering or materials discipline.
  • Experience with metal additive manufacturing or laser powder bed fusion.
  • Experience operating SEM, Instron, or other complex materials equipment.
  • Familiarity with large datasets and statistical analysis tools such as R, JMP, or Minitab.
  • Strong cross-functional communication, ownership, and problem-solving skills.
