Senior Design Engineer (Advanced Energy Hardware)

Location: Hawthorne, Los Angeles, CA — full-time onsite presence required five days per week, with very limited exceptions.

Salary: $150,000–$200,000 per year, plus significant stock options.

What you will do

• Design and redesign energy hardware, including turbines, rotating machinery, heat exchangers, thermal management systems, valves, manifolds, pressure vessels, combustors, fuel delivery systems, and balance-of-plant components.
• Develop component-level and systems-level understanding of requirements, performance drivers, and constraints across energy generation, transmission, and storage programs.
• Lead first-principles redesigns that use additive manufacturing to enable new geometries, consolidated assemblies, improved performance, and reduced cost or lead time.
• Define and evaluate concepts considering materials, tolerances, thermal and structural behavior, manufacturability, qualification, and production scalability.
• Partner with engineering, operations, and customer engineering teams to refine concepts, present design solutions, and deliver execution outcomes.
• Identify new application areas and contribute technical direction to the product, process, and technology roadmap.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related technical discipline.
• At least 5 years of hands-on engineering experience in power generation, oil and gas, nuclear, renewable energy, or a related advanced energy industry.
• Experience leading complex hardware programs from concept through qualification and production.
• Experience designing or analyzing turbomachinery, thermal systems, fluid systems, pressure-bearing hardware, or high-performance structural components.
• Deep systems-level understanding of complex mechanical hardware and component integration within larger assemblies.
• Ability to work onsite in Hawthorne five days per week.

Nice to have

• 10+ years of hands-on engineering experience in advanced energy industries.
• Familiarity with metal 3D printing and design for additive manufacturing concepts.
• Experience with design for manufacturing, hardware qualification, production ramp, mentoring, and technical direction.
• Strong first-principles reasoning and ability to communicate complex technical concepts to engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
