Android Development Lead (ATAK)

Location: Hybrid in Arlington, VA; Clarksburg, MD; or Palo Alto, CA, United States. Up to 15% travel required. The position may require eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.

Salary: $150,000–$220,000 per year, plus equity for most eligible full-time roles.

What you will do

• Design, implement, and maintain tactical command-and-control capabilities through ATAK plugin development for Android.
• Architect and evolve remote C2 systems connecting hirify.global platforms with ATAK and partner interfaces.
• Design APIs and data models for reliability, flexibility, and performance across distributed systems.
• Enable robust communications with autonomy and networking engineers under constrained and adversarial conditions.
• Guide user experiences for situational awareness, health monitoring, and direct platform control.
• Review and contribute to Java, Kotlin, C++, and C code, documentation, field validation, and third-party integrations.

Requirements

• Deep expertise in Java and Android plugin development.
• Experience with SQL databases, Android Jetpack, and Material UI.
• Familiarity with C++ or C codebases, JNI development, Linux environments, networking protocols, and distributed systems.
• Ability to lead efforts autonomously from design through deployment and support engineering quality through mentorship and design reviews.
• 7+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years focused on ATAK plugin development.
• Eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance may be required.

Nice to have

• Experience with TAK Server, tactical radios, or defense-grade networking systems.
• Familiarity with CMake, Conan, Git, gRPC, and protobuf.
• Experience in defense, robotics, or autonomous vehicle domains.
• Experience designing APIs and transferring data over low-bandwidth, high-latency networks.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a similar field, or equivalent experience.
