Pulsed Power Physicist (Fusion Energy)

Salary: $120,000–$160,000 per year

What you will do

• Optimize electron-beam efficiency and energy deposition on target.
• Lead the design, fabrication, and testing of cathode systems using explosive emission, thermionic, and photocathode technologies.
• Design and optimize hibachi foil and anode grid structures for efficient beam transport.
• Develop and validate analytical, PIC, and SPICE models to guide cathode and beam transport designs.
• Build, commission, operate, and maintain complex experimental systems, including ultra-high-vacuum equipment.
• Manage experimental documentation, hardware procurement, bills of materials, vendors, and integration with diode and laser architectures.

Requirements

• PhD in physics, electrical engineering, or a closely related field; an MS with exceptional relevant experience may be considered.
• Deep expertise in beam diagnostics, including Faraday cups, beam imaging, energy analysis, and calorimetry.
• Hands-on experience with vacuum electronics, electron-beam generation, and ultra-high-vacuum systems.
• Experience independently designing experiments, interpreting results, and documenting findings.
• Experience building and commissioning mechanical, electrical, vacuum, and controls systems end to end.
• Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted refugee or asylee.

Nice to have

• Experience with explosive emission or cold cathode technologies.
• Familiarity with semiconductor fabrication processes and PIC or beam optics simulation tools such as Chicago, CST, or COMSOL.
• Background in beam transport optimization, excimer lasers, or inertial fusion energy.
• Experience with technical documentation, procurement, scheduling, and vendor coordination.
