Develops stellarator-based fusion energy systems using computer-controlled arrays of planar coils to create a simpler path toward commercial zero-emission energy.

What you will do

  • Run and analyze high-fidelity particle-following simulations of alpha-particle and neutral-beam-ion confinement in 3D magnetic geometries.
  • Investigate Alfvén Eigenmode stability with kinetic-MHD hybrid codes and assess effects on energetic-particle transport.
  • Develop reduced-order models and machine-learning surrogates for real-time prediction of pressure profiles.
  • Collaborate on coil and divertor designs to reduce fast-ion losses and heat loads.
  • Develop synthetic diagnostics, including fast-ion loss detectors and neutron cameras, for future experiments.

Requirements

  • PhD in Plasma Physics, Computational Physics, or a related field, or a degree with equivalent research experience.
  • Programming proficiency in scientific-computing languages such as Python, Fortran, C++, or MATLAB.
  • Familiarity with kinetic, MHD, or particle-following codes.
  • Experience developing machine-learning surrogates for physical systems.
  • Familiarity with energetic-particle diagnostics.
  • Ability to collaborate with scientists and engineers in a startup or research environment.
