TL;DR
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (Robotics): Own the full product lifecycle of robot Class-A cladding surfaces from concept and design integration through validation, industrialization, and mass production with an accent on thin-walled component design, materials, tolerances, and manufacturing feasibility. Focus on developing precise CAD and GD&T strategies, solving complex surface and subsystem integration challenges, coordinating prototypes and suppliers, and ensuring reliable production-scale assembly.

Location: Mountain View, United States

Salary: $175,000–$250,000 per year, plus equity

Builds generalist intelligent robots across the full robotics stack, including hardware, robot systems, infrastructure, foundation world models, and manufacturing.

What you will do

  • Own the full lifecycle of robot Class-A cladding surfaces from concept and design studio interaction through end-of-life.
  • Integrate cladding subsystems while balancing aesthetics, mechanical performance, cost, timing, and reliability.
  • Define design criteria, manage tolerances, and perform dimensional stack-up analysis for functional and aesthetic interfaces.
  • Design complex B-side features and robust attachment strategies, including ribs, bosses, clip towers, hooks, snaps, and welds.
  • Coordinate prototype builds, evaluate assembly feasibility, validate components, and interpret structural and Moldflow FEA results.
  • Produce CATIA 3D CAD models and 2D engineering drawings, and work with supply chain and Tier 1/2 suppliers on feasibility, RFQs, and build issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of engineering experience, including at least one full-cycle product launch.
  • Deep knowledge of thin-walled component design and/or high-performance fiber-resin composites.
  • Strong understanding of material selection, geometry, structural trade-offs, datum strategies, tolerances, and GD&T.
  • Proficiency in CATIA or an equivalent CAD system, including communicating concepts through sections and CAD studies.
  • Exceptional organization and first-principles problem solving under tight timelines.

Nice to have

  • Experience with textiles, artificial leather, elastomers, or cellular structures.
  • Knowledge of injection molding, RIM, vacuum forming, or thermoforming.
  • Familiarity with polymer finishes such as painting or plating, and vehicle interior lighting integration.
  • Experience spanning design engineering and manufacturing or assembly engineering.
