Location: Los Angeles, CA / Hawthorne, CA; full-time onsite presence five days a week

Salary: $95,000–$120,000 per year, depending on academic level and demonstrated experience.

What you will do

  • Support the development of materials and process best practices and materials testing infrastructure.
  • Operate equipment to measure tensile strength, surface roughness, microstructure, and other material properties.
  • Generate and track quality metrics for printed customer parts, including dimensional accuracy, defect distribution, and surface roughness.
  • Organize, analyze, and interpret data, then present key findings.
  • Connect materials findings with upstream printing process improvements, including training advanced machine learning models.
  • Optimize and automate materials and process procedures to reduce manual work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university or college.
  • Hands-on laboratory or coursework experience with metals characterization, processing, or sample preparation, including cutting, grinding, polishing, acid etching, or optical microscopy.
  • Strong understanding of materials engineering fundamentals and a first-principles approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to work onsite full-time in Hawthorne, California, five days per week.

Nice to have

  • Advanced degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience with metal additive manufacturing or laser powder bed fusion processes.
  • Experience operating complex materials equipment such as SEM or Instron.
  • Familiarity with large datasets and statistical analysis tools such as R, JMP, or Minitab.
  • Strong cross-disciplinary communication, ownership, resilience, and hands-on problem-solving skills.
