TL;DR
Design Engineer (Robotics) (Actuators, Precision Gear Systems): Designing motors, gear trains, and actuator housings for generalist intelligent robots from concept through mass production with an accent on precision mechanical design, CAD, GD&T, tolerance stacks, and manufacturability. Focus on integrating electromechanical components, analyzing test data, coordinating suppliers, and developing hardware that survives demanding duty cycles.

Location: Mountain View, United States

Salary: $175,000–$250,000 per year, plus equity.

What you will do

  • Own the mechanical design of motors, gear trains, and actuator housings from concept through prototype and mass production.
  • Create detailed 3D CAD models and 2D engineering drawings with GD&T, datum strategies, design-for-assembly, and design-for-manufacturing considerations.
  • Perform tolerance stack-ups for air gaps, gear meshes, bearing fits, preload paths, and other critical interfaces.
  • Coordinate suppliers through RFQs, technical feasibility reviews, prototype builds, and production manufacturing issues.
  • Define characterization, durability, environmental, life, and failure-mode-specific test plans with modeling and test engineers.
  • Use test results and model predictions to diagnose failures and iterate component designs in collaboration with electronics, controls, and systems engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of mechanical design experience, including at least one full-cycle launch of precision electromechanical hardware.
  • Strong knowledge of bearing selection and preload, gear sizing and tolerances, shaft design, fits and finishes, fastener engineering, and rotating assemblies.
  • Deep proficiency in CAD, preferably CATIA, with production-level datum strategy and GD&T experience.
  • Experience with precision gear systems such as harmonic drives, cycloidal drives, or planetary gearboxes, and with PMSM/BLDC motor mechanical design.
  • Knowledge of precision machining, MIM, die casting, gear cutting or grinding, heat treatment, reliability engineering, B-life specification, fatigue analysis, and Weibull-based life testing.

Nice to have

  • Experience in robotics, automotive electrification, aerospace actuation, industrial servos, EVs, legged robots, manipulators, or other high-cycle electromechanical systems.
  • Background spanning design engineering and manufacturing or quality engineering.
  • Comfort interpreting structural, modal, and thermal FEA and selecting between hand calculations and simulation.
