TL;DR
Director of Nuclear Engineering (Inertial Fusion Energy): Building and leading Xcimer Energy’s nuclear engineering discipline for inertial fusion facilities and programs with an accent on nuclear design bases, radiation transport, shielding, activation, and radiological safety. Focus on establishing rigorous engineering standards, managing technical risks, and growing multidisciplinary nuclear engineering capabilities across the organization.

Location: On-site at the headquarters in Denver, Colorado, United States. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, current U.S. permanent residents, or lawfully admitted refugees or asylees.

Salary: $220,000–$260,000 per year

What you will do

  • Build, lead, and grow the Nuclear Engineering Department, including hiring, mentoring, onboarding, and performance development.
  • Establish nuclear engineering standards, methods, best practices, and career development pathways across concept development, design, testing, and operations.
  • Define and maintain the nuclear design basis for facilities and programs, aligning analyses and requirements with performance, safety, and regulatory objectives.
  • Lead radiation transport, shielding, activation, source-term, uncertainty, radiological safety, and hazards analysis activities.
  • Partner with Program leadership and multidisciplinary engineering groups to scope, resource, schedule, and integrate nuclear engineering work.
  • Develop long-term capability roadmaps and external partnerships with national laboratories, universities, and industry collaborators.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in Nuclear Engineering or a closely related technical field; a PhD is strongly preferred.
  • 15+ years of nuclear engineering experience, including senior technical leadership responsibilities.
  • Experience building, mentoring, and leading high-performing technical teams.
  • Strong foundation in radiation physics, nuclear engineering fundamentals, deterministic and Monte Carlo neutron/photon transport methods, and analytical methods.
  • Experience with MCNP, OpenMC, or equivalent nuclear engineering analysis software, as well as technical planning, budgets, schedules, and performance metrics.
  • Must hold eligible U.S. citizenship, permanent residence, refugee, or asylum status.

Nice to have

  • Experience in fusion energy, high-radiation facilities, or advanced energy systems.
  • Experience with national laboratories, universities, or large multi-institution technical programs.
  • Publication record or recognized technical leadership in the nuclear engineering community.
