Director Instrumentation, Control, and Electrical – Power Conversion (Nuclear Energy)

Location: Torrance, California, United States. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States as a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.

Salary: $225,000–$300,000 USD per year

What you will do

• Own the instrumentation, control, and electrical design basis for the Brayton-cycle power conversion unit, including compressors, turbines, recuperators, intercoolers, generators, and auxiliary systems.
• Define instrumentation and control strategies for high-speed turbomachinery, including shaft dynamics, vibration, tip clearance, temperature, pressure, flow, startup, shutdown, trip logic, and load governing.
• Lead generator-set electrical design covering excitation, voltage regulation, synchronization, protection relays, grid interface, and islanded operation.
• Establish facility power distribution architecture, including medium- and low-voltage switchgear, variable-frequency drives, power electronics, and auxiliary systems.
• Lead IC&E design, commissioning, calibration, measurement uncertainty, and data-quality programs for turbomachinery development and test facilities.
• Build and lead the multidisciplinary IC&E organization while managing scope, schedule, budget, vendors, integrators, and plant integration.

Requirements

• 15+ years of engineering experience in instrumentation, control systems, and/or electrical design for rotating machinery, turbomachinery, or high-performance industrial systems.
• Hands-on experience with turbomachinery control systems, including speed governing, surge protection, bearing monitoring, or trip logic.
• Experience leading IC&E scope for test facilities, development rigs, or capital construction projects.
• Strong electrical systems background covering switchgear, motor drives, protection and controls, and facility power distribution.
• Experience managing IC&E teams and vendor relationships across multiple project phases.
• U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency is required for employment authorization.

Nice to have

• Experience with high-speed generators, excitation systems, power conversion electronics, Brayton cycles, gas turbines, or compressor-expander systems.
• Experience with helium or other working-fluid systems, high-bandwidth data acquisition, and dynamic rotating-machinery measurement.
• Nuclear, commercial, defense, or national laboratory experience in power conversion or balance-of-plant systems.
• Knowledge of API 670, IEEE 1023, IEC 61511, NFPA 70/79, or a PE license in instrumentation, control, or electrical engineering.
