TL;DR
Process Engineering Intern (Summer 2027) (AI) (Metal 3D Printing): Developing and refining processes for advanced metal additive manufacturing systems through experiments, large-scale in-situ data analysis, and post-build material characterization with an accent on multi-physics behavior and data-driven process improvement. Focus on analyzing tensile strength, surface roughness, alloy microstructure, and tool qualification procedures.

Location: Los Angeles, California, with full-time onsite presence five days a week in Hawthorne. Very limited exceptions to onsite work are available. Relocation assistance is provided.

Salary: $30/hour for undergraduate engineering interns, $32.50/hour for master's interns, and $35/hour for PhD interns.

What you will do

  • Analyze large in-situ data sets to understand physical mechanisms in metal additive manufacturing processes and hardware operation.
  • Execute experiments and analyze results to improve metal additive processes.
  • Perform post-build metrology and analyze tensile strength, surface roughness, alloy microstructure, and other material properties.
  • Support the development and implementation of tool qualification procedures.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, software, and simulation engineers on rapid, data-driven, and machine-learning-enabled process improvement.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in materials science, physics, or a similar engineering discipline.
  • Experience with experimental design and statistical data analysis.
  • Strong data analysis skills and ability to interpret extremely large data sets.
  • Experience with Python and/or MATLAB.
  • Ability to work hands-on, solve difficult problems, communicate effectively, and collaborate across disciplines.

Nice to have

  • Undergraduate research experience in materials science, physics, or mechanical engineering.
  • Process development experience in semiconductors, solar, displays, or other cutting-edge industries.
  • Experience with R, JMP, or Minitab.
  • Passion for advancing metal 3D printing.
  • Evidence of academic excellence, leadership, resilience, or achievement against adversity.
