What you will do
- Set up and operate universal testing machines for tensile, compression, flexural, shear, and fatigue testing.
- Test metals, polymers, composites, and ceramics according to ASTM, ISO, and internal aerospace standards.
- Prepare specimens to required dimensional tolerances and surface finishes.
- Select, install, and align grips and fixtures for high-temperature, cryogenic, vacuum, and non-standard test setups.
- Record, process, and compile test data into reports for materials and design engineering teams.
- Perform equipment maintenance, calibration checks, troubleshooting, and laboratory safety activities.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
- At least 3 years of direct experience operating mechanical testing equipment in a structured laboratory environment.
- Hands-on experience testing metals, polymers, composites, and ceramics.
- Functional knowledge of mechanical testing standards such as ASTM E8, D3039, D638, and C1161, including specimen geometry requirements.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to safely handle high-load equipment, extensometers, and strain gauges.
- Applicants must be U.S. Persons or eligible to obtain an export license under applicable U.S. export regulations, including ITAR and EAR.
Nice to have
- Associate’s degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related technical field.
- 5+ years of experience with environmental mechanical testing in cryogenic chambers, elevated-temperature furnaces, or vacuum environments, preferably in aerospace or defense.
- Basic machining experience with mills, lathes, or band saws.
- Knowledge of Digital Image Correlation, metallographic preparation, or failure analysis.
- Experience with fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth rate testing.
