TL;DR
M&P Lab Technician (Aerospace): Building and operating a materials laboratory for supersonic jet engine development with an accent on metallographic preparation, microstructure evaluation, mechanical testing, and failure investigations. Focus on establishing laboratory procedures and calibration systems, analyzing aerospace alloys and engine hardware, and producing traceable engineering records.
Location: Centennial, Colorado, United States. Applicants must meet U.S. ITAR and EAR eligibility requirements, including U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residence, protected individual status, or eligibility to obtain the required authorizations.
Salary: $32–$46 per hour, depending on location, experience, and performance.
Company
develops supersonic aircraft and jet engines, with engine design, manufacturing, testing, and materials validation conducted under one roof.
What you will do
- Prepare metallurgical samples through sectioning, mounting, polishing, and etching for stainless steels, titanium, and nickel-based superalloys.
- Perform microstructural analysis on machined, brazed, welded, heat-treated, and thermally sprayed engine components.
- Conduct hardness and microhardness testing, furnace uniformity surveys, and chemical or cleaning solution analysis.
- Support tensile, fatigue, creep, and elevated-temperature mechanical testing, including specimen handling, setup, and data recording.
- Support failure and damage investigations, evaluate supplier certifications against specifications and drawings, and document findings in engineering reports.
- Help establish the laboratory through procedures, calibration systems, equipment selection input, consumables management, and material characterization programs.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of hands-on experience in a metallurgical or materials testing laboratory.
- Strong metallographic preparation and microstructure evaluation skills, ideally involving nickel superalloys, titanium, stainless steels, or other aerospace alloys.
- Proficiency with hardness and microhardness testing.
- Experience reading engineering drawings, AMS/ASTM specifications, and supplier certifications.
- Disciplined documentation practices from an AS9100- or NADCAP-type environment.
- Ability to work independently and communicate findings directly to engineers.
Nice to have
- Mechanical testing experience with tensile, fatigue, creep, or elevated-temperature testing.
- Failure analysis experience, including fractography, SEM/EDS exposure, or root-cause investigation support.
- Furnace survey or pyrometry experience, including AMS 2750.
- Experience establishing or significantly upgrading laboratory capabilities.
- SPC familiarity, data analysis skills, or education in metallurgy, materials science, or a related field.
Culture & Benefits
- Work in an R&D environment where the materials laboratory is being built alongside the engine program.
- Collaborate directly with materials scientists, engineers, and engine test teams.
- Shape laboratory procedures, standards, equipment, and reporting systems from the ground up.
- Benefits may include long-term incentives or equity, flexible paid time off, and other employee benefits.
- Equal opportunity workplace with a focus on merit and excellence.
