Materials Engineer II (3D Printing)

Location: Onsite at the Austin, Texas campus, United States; work includes office, laboratory, and field environments. Travel may be required up to 30%.

What you will do

• Develop new formulations of cement-based 3D-printable materials and optimize existing mixtures.
• Execute standardized and one-off testing programs for 3D-printed materials and structures.
• Participate in full-scale testing campaigns and support development, design, construction, and post-construction projects.
• Troubleshoot material performance in Vulcan and Magma systems and provide feedback to hardware, controls, and software teams.
• Prepare test reports, presentations, R&D initiatives, programs, and proposals.
• Develop and adapt test methods for 3D-printed applications and support laboratory personnel through training.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or Materials Science focused on cement-based materials, or a relevant master's degree with 3+ years of industry experience, or bachelor's degree with 5+ years of industry experience.
• Knowledge of concrete and cement-based materials science, technology, and structural performance.
• Experience evaluating cement-based materials with ASTM, EN, ISO, and one-off testing methods.
• Experience developing, optimizing, and troubleshooting concrete mixtures or other cement-based products.
• Ability to analyze large datasets, draw data-driven conclusions, and solve technical problems.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds and work across office, laboratory, and field environments.

• Interest in learning large-scale 3D-printing hardware, control, software, architecture, and design systems.
• Experience with software for data analysis, data acquisition, and cement-based materials performance modeling.
