TL;DR
Materials Engineering Intern (Summer 2027) (Metal 3D Printing): Developing materials testing infrastructure and characterization practices for industrial metal 3D printing systems with an accent on tensile strength, surface roughness, microstructure, and printed-part quality metrics. Focus on preparing metallurgical samples, analyzing large materials datasets, and connecting material findings to upstream printing process improvements.

Location: Los Angeles, California; full-time onsite presence five days a week. The facility is based in Hawthorne, with very limited exceptions to onsite work. Relocation assistance is provided.

Salary: $30/hour for undergraduate engineering interns, $32.50/hour for master's interns, or $35/hour for PhD interns.

What you will do

  • Operate equipment to measure tensile strength, surface roughness, microstructure, and other material properties.
  • Generate and track quality metrics for printed customer parts, including dimensional accuracy, defect distribution, and surface roughness.
  • Organize, analyze, interpret, and present materials and material-property data.
  • Develop and optimize metallurgical sample preparation techniques, including cutting, grinding, polishing, acid etching, and optical microscopy.
  • Support process development by connecting materials findings to upstream printing process improvements.
  • Establish and refine procedures for measuring and quantifying material quality.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in materials science, materials engineering, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, or a similar discipline.
  • Experience with experimental design and statistical data analysis.
  • Strong data analysis skills and the ability to interpret information from extremely large datasets.
  • Ability to work onsite in Hawthorne five days per week.

Nice to have

  • Undergraduate research experience in materials science, metallurgy, or mechanical engineering.
  • Exposure to metallurgical sample preparation and optical microscopy.
  • Experience with metal additive manufacturing or laser powder bed fusion processes.
  • Experience operating materials characterization equipment such as SEM or Instron.
  • Experience with R, JMP, or Minitab for statistical data analysis.
