TL;DR
Senior Shift Operations Engineer – SPARC (Fusion Plant Operations): Preparing, commissioning, and operating the SPARC fusion facility while maintaining critical electrical, cooling, HVAC, compressed air, vacuum, and cryogenic systems with an accent on 24/7 rotating-shift operations, troubleshooting, and operational safety. Focus on developing commissioning procedures, performing switching and tagging, coordinating field work, and creating maintenance plans for first-of-a-kind plant systems.

Location: Devens, Massachusetts, United States; on-site. The role requires flexible rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and shifts of up to 12 hours, to provide 24/7 facility coverage.

Salary: $110,000–$185,000 per year, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

  • Prepare, commission, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain the SPARC fusion facility and its integrated plant systems.
  • Operate core systems including cooling water, compressed air, HVAC, liquid nitrogen, industrial heating, vacuum, cryogenic, and electrical distribution systems.
  • Work with engineering teams to develop and execute operating and commissioning procedures.
  • Coordinate and perform field work, switching, and tagging activities to support safe maintenance and operations.
  • Develop standard operating procedures, maintenance plans, and safety-compliance practices.
  • Support training for operations staff and long-term plant reliability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field.
  • 7+ years of operations experience in complex facilities.
  • Experience with high-voltage or complex electrical environments and industrial process, cooling-water, or ventilation systems.
  • Previous qualification in Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) or a tagging program.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, with developed analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work on-site in an industrial facility with heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree in engineering or a related field.
  • Experience with cryogenic process systems, high-purity gas systems, or high-voltage and high-current electrical systems.
  • Experience in radiologically controlled environments or with high-power radio-frequency systems.
  • Experience with industrial software controls integration and troubleshooting.
  • Background in Human Performance principles.
