What you will do

  • Design and iterate actuator packaging for the humanoid robot's mono leg, including mounting hardware, spacers, alignment features, and cable exits.
  • Develop structural cast-part designs optimized for stiffness and mass efficiency while incorporating draft, wall-thickness, and vendor castability requirements.
  • Implement thermal paths, thermal interface materials, and heat-sinking features, then validate performance through thermal testing.
  • Run structural analyses covering static strength, stiffness, and basic fatigue, and correlate results with physical tests.
  • Create and maintain CAD models, drawings, tolerance stacks, and BOMs for design reviews and manufacturing handoffs.
  • Build prototypes and test setups, conduct structural, thermal, and durability tests, document results, and collaborate with mobile base, torso, actuation, and electrical teams.

Requirements

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • 0–2 years of mechanical design or hardware engineering experience; internships, co-ops, and serious project teams count.
  • Proficiency with CAD software such as CATIA, SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, or similar.
  • Strong fundamentals in statics, stress, stiffness, and heat transfer, including the ability to validate designs with hand calculations.
  • Familiarity with machining, casting, sheet metal, and 3D printing, plus hands-on experience assembling, testing, and troubleshooting hardware.
  • Strong attention to detail, engineering documentation skills, willingness to learn from senior engineers, and openness to rapid design iteration.

Nice to have

  • Experience designing cast, molded, or otherwise tooled parts.
  • Exposure to structural or thermal FEA and correlating analyses with physical parts.
  • Experience with robotics competitions or engineering teams such as FIRST, Formula SAE, Baja, or university robotics.
  • Hands-on FDM or SLA 3D printing experience, familiarity with GD&T, or personal mechanism-design projects.
