Location: Gaithersburg, Maryland, United States. Work site expectations: 4–5 days in the office; remote eligibility is available for specified senior levels. Standard hours are 8:00am ET to 5:00pm ET, Monday–Friday. Travel is 10% for project assignments, or 25% if remote.
Salary: $100,000–$125,000 for Level III; $125,000–$150,000 for Level IV; $160,000–$190,000 for Level V; $200,000–$230,000 for Level VI per year.

What you will do
- Design fire protection systems and components for nuclear power plants, including detection, suppression, smoke control, fire water supply, and passive fire barriers.
- Develop system architectures, CAD-generated models, design documents, drawings, design bases, technical reports, and fire and safe-shutdown analyses.
- Perform hydraulic calculations, fire modeling, smoke control analyses, fire barrier qualification assessments, and other engineering computations.
- Identify and document fire protection requirements, interfaces, design criteria, and applicable codes and standards.
- Coordinate technical scope across stakeholders, systems engineers, suppliers, and external engineering partners.
- Manage engineering changes, procurement technical content, system risks, inspections, audits, investigations, and operational fire protection support.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in fire protection engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited university.
- Typically five or more years of mechanical engineering experience for Level III; higher levels require 10, 15, or 20 years of experience.
- Experience developing fire protection systems for nuclear-related projects, including sprinkler, detection, fire barrier, smoke control, and fire water systems.
- Knowledge of fire science, fire dynamics, fire suppression and detection systems, fire modeling, and mechanical design of structural and fluidic components.
- Working knowledge of NFPA codes, particularly NFPA 804/805, 10 CFR 50 Appendix R, Regulatory Guide 1.189, and the International Building Code.
- Must be able to work within the US-based office and schedule requirements; participates in E-Verify.
