TL;DR
Propulsion Engineer (Aerospace): Leading the development and integration of solid rocket motor systems for reusable hypersonic flight test vehicles with an accent on supplier oversight, vehicle integration, testing, and flight operations. Focus on building performance models, conducting ballistics and thermal analyses, interpreting post-test data, and supporting ground support equipment and test-range operations.

Location: Onsite in Mojave, California, United States. Travel to supplier facilities and test ranges is required, estimated at 15–30%.

Base salary: $120,500–$158,000 annually for Senior level or $157,000–$206,000 annually for Staff level.

What you will do

  • Lead requirements and interface management for solid rocket motor systems across design, development, testing, assembly, integration, and flight operations.
  • Serve as the SRM Responsible Engineer and oversee supplier activities, progress, technical reviews, and requirements compliance.
  • Analyze post-test data and collaborate with the supplier to interpret results and resolve technical challenges.
  • Develop propulsion performance models supporting guidance, navigation, and control.
  • Perform ballistics and thermal analyses and support the specification and design of ground support equipment.
  • Coordinate SRM deliveries, inspections, installation, and flight-test operations while communicating with the hypersonic vehicle propulsion lead.

Requirements

  • Senior level: bachelor’s degree and 5–10 years of engineering experience; Staff level: bachelor’s degree and 10–20 years of engineering experience, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience designing, developing, testing, and operating solid rocket motors.
  • Knowledge of solid rocket motor manufacturing, including composite case winding and propellant mixing, pouring, and casting.
  • Experience with supplier management, aerospace systems integration, and post-test data analysis.
  • Experience with Solid Performance Program and/or Chemical Equilibrium with Applications, plus scientific coding in Python, MATLAB, Simulink, or C/C++.
  • Ability to communicate technical challenges clearly, work independently, and adapt to changing priorities.

Nice to have

  • Rocket motor sizing, configuration trade studies, ballistics, thermal or combustion modeling.
  • Aerospace-grade hardware, mechanical design, ASME Y14.5, explosives handling, or ground-test hardware experience.
  • Experience with component or subsystem test planning and execution.
  • CAD experience with NX, CATIA, or SolidWorks and experience specifying or designing ground support equipment.
