Lead QPU Design Engineer (Quantum Computing)

Location: London, UK; hybrid role based around the Islington lab

hirify.global is a London-based quantum computing scale-up developing silicon-chip quantum processors for applications including materials modelling, medicine, and artificial intelligence.

What you will do

• Lead end-to-end design execution for silicon spin qubit quantum processor units and test vehicles from concept through tapeout.
• Translate qubit architecture requirements into manufacturable gate layouts, bias networks, and multi-qubit interconnects.
• Define connectivity and schematic capture, generate netlists, and perform circuit simulation and LVS verification.
• Own tapeout readiness reviews, verification, and risk management.
• Collaborate with experimentalists and device modelling specialists to refine designs based on fabrication constraints and simulation results.
• Define workflows, standards, toolchains, PDK and DFT development, while leading and mentoring the QPU Design team.

Requirements

• PhD or equivalent experience in electrical engineering, physics, or a related field.
• 8+ years of experience in experimental hardware within research-adjacent or industrial environments.
• Personal accountability for leading hardware from concept through tapeout.
• Deep expertise in either custom physical layout or EM, electrostatic, and circuit simulation, with working fluency in the other domain.
• Hands-on experience with DRC, LVS, extraction, model validation, semiconductor device physics, and integration across physics, simulation, and layout.
• Experience building processes and mentoring engineers.

Nice to have

• Silicon spin qubit, quantum dot, or superconducting qubit experience.
• CMOS process integration, 3D integration, or advanced packaging experience.
• Microwave circuit design and scripting with Python, SKILL, or Tcl.
• Experience correlating simulations with low-temperature measurements.
