TL;DR
Senior Quantum Field Engineer (Quantum Engineering): Deploying and integrating superconducting quantum systems at customer sites, from initial bring-up and characterization through production cloud operation, with an accent on cryogenic hardware, qubit performance, and gate calibration. Focus on debugging failures across hardware, software, and infrastructure, validating 1Q/2Q gates, automating recalibration, and supporting global customer deployments.

Location: United Kingdom; hybrid workplace with regular international travel to customer sites, including approximately 30–50% travel and up to 10–25% international travel as stated in the requirements.

What you will do

  • Own technical work during quantum-system deployments, including bring-up, experiments or calibrations, validation, and documentation.
  • Debug failures across wiring, electronics, devices, software, and infrastructure, isolate root causes, and drive cross-functional resolution.
  • Monitor deployed systems for regressions, drift, and outages, and support cloud operation.
  • Act as the primary technical contact for customers and communicate experimental results to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Characterize qubits and readout, troubleshoot cryogenic microwave hardware, or calibrate and optimize single- and two-qubit gates depending on the assigned track.
  • Improve internal tooling, automation, documentation, and deployment workflows in collaboration with R&D teams.

Requirements

  • PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent degree with relevant industry or postdoctoral experience; alternatively, an MS/BS with 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • Hands-on experience with superconducting qubit devices and proficiency in Python in a scientific or engineering context.
  • Strong systematic debugging skills across the full measurement chain and the ability to work in customer-facing field environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including experimental reporting and briefings for non-specialists.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally to support customer deployments.
  • Track-specific experience with cryogenic microwave hardware, or with calibration and characterization of 1Q and 2Q gates, gate error sources, Git, and formal code review.

Nice to have

  • Experience operating dilution refrigerators and diagnosing qubit failure modes.
  • Experience with collaborative software development, CI, and code review.
  • Experience with automated recalibration, cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS, or Azure.
  • Experience with pulse-level gate optimization or rotational on-call production support.
  • Previous customer-facing or field engineering experience.
