TL;DR
Firmware Engineer (Embedded Controls/C and Rust): Developing bare-metal and RTOS firmware for power electronics, battery systems, safety controls, and field-deployed military power products with an accent on real-time control, fault protection, and hardware integration. Focus on designing deterministic firmware, debugging real hardware, implementing thermal and telemetry systems, and ensuring reliable operation under austere conditions.

Location: Onsite in San Bruno, California, United States; requires 10% domestic and international travel and occasional extended or weekend hours.

Salary: $130,000–$180,000 annually, plus early-stage equity and company-sponsored benefits.

Company

hirify.global designs and manufactures power products for the U.S. military and its allies, including systems that decouple power generation from consumption in austere environments.

What you will do

  • Develop and tune firmware for inverters, chargers, battery systems, and other power electronics.
  • Implement real-time fault detection, protection logic, and thermal control for safe operation.
  • Build sensor data acquisition, telemetry, operator input, and field interaction systems.
  • Architect firmware for bare-metal targets and real-time operating systems.
  • Integrate firmware with electrical, power electronics, and hardware systems during bring-up and bench debugging.
  • Support reliable operation of products deployed in resource-constrained field environments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • 3+ years of experience writing firmware for hardware shipped and operated in the field.
  • Hands-on bare-metal and RTOS development experience.
  • Fluency in C or C++ for resource-constrained, real-time targets.
  • Demonstrated experience bringing up and debugging firmware on real hardware.
  • Authorization to work in the United States is required; proof must be provided within the first three days of employment.

Nice to have

  • Production Rust experience on embedded targets.
  • Experience with power electronics, motor control, or battery management firmware.
  • Experience with safety-critical or fault-tolerant systems.
  • Knowledge of ISO 26262, DO-178C, or other software functional safety standards.
  • Experience with CAN, SPI, I2C, or UART interfaces.

Culture & Benefits

  • High-ownership, hands-on work on hardware used by military operators.
  • Close collaboration with electrical, power electronics, and hardware engineers.
  • Emphasis on first-principles thinking, root-cause analysis, and data-driven decisions.
  • Early-stage equity and access to company-sponsored benefit plans.
  • Support for domestic and international travel as part of product development and deployment.
