TL;DR
Power Electronics Engineer (DC/DC, DC/AC, GaN/SiC): Designing and taking power conversion, protection, isolation, and distribution systems from architecture through production for military and automotive mobility platforms with an accent on high-voltage systems, power density, thermal management, and low electromagnetic emissions. Focus on developing inverter systems, validating hardware under electrical and environmental conditions, and solving complex EMI, thermal, and reliability challenges in austere operating environments.

Location: San Bruno, California, United States. U.S. work authorization is required within the first 3 days of employment.

Salary: $130,000–$180,000 annually, plus early-stage equity and company-sponsored benefits.

Company

hirify.global designs and manufactures power products for the U.S. military and its allies, enabling power generation to be decoupled from consumption in austere and resource-constrained environments.

What you will do

  • Own the full-cycle design of DC/DC and DC/AC converters, protection circuits, isolation systems, and power distribution units across low- and high-voltage systems.
  • Develop GaN and SiC inverter systems with advanced power-control schemes and design for low conducted and radiated emissions.
  • Create schematics and oversee PCB layouts using Altium or equivalent, optimizing power density, thermal management, and EMI mitigation.
  • Plan and execute hardware bring-up, verification, validation, environmental, and qualification testing using laboratory power and thermal measurement equipment.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, firmware, and software engineers on enclosure integration, connectors, harnesses, thermal paths, and power-management specifications.
  • Travel to military and non-military test sites, exercises, and global supplier engagements to support hardware evaluation in real conditions.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering; an M.S. is a plus.
  • 2–5 years of power electronics hardware design experience, including at least 2 years with low- and high-voltage power conversion and management.
  • End-to-end ownership of power electronics hardware from topology architecture and schematics through production.
  • Experience with protection circuits, high-voltage isolation, DC/DC and DC/AC converter topologies, and analog or digital control-loop compensation.
  • Experience with EMI/EMC requirements, filtering, layout practices, and conducted and radiated emissions; MIL-STD-461 familiarity is strongly preferred.
  • Hands-on bench skills with oscilloscopes, power analyzers, thermal cameras, electronic loads, test fixtures, and mechanical or thermal constraints.

Nice to have

  • Experience with GaN and SiC semiconductors, AC power conversion, transformers, or pulsed-load power delivery.
  • Familiarity with UN 38.3, UL 2580, IEC 62133, MIL-STD-810, or MIL-STD-461 qualification requirements.
  • Embedded firmware experience or collaboration with firmware teams on BMS and power management.
  • Experience with LTspice, SIMPLIS, MATLAB/Simulink, or COMSOL.

Culture & Benefits

  • High-ownership role as one of the first power electronics hires, with direct influence over products across multiple platforms and sectors.
  • Prototype-to-production work on hardware supporting military and defense applications.
  • Early-stage equity and access to company-sponsored benefit plans.
  • Close interdisciplinary collaboration and opportunities to work with global suppliers and field-test hardware.
