TL;DR
Mechanical Development Intern (Aerospace): Developing weight-reduction and propulsion-performance solutions for Rutherford engines and Electron’s Stage 3 system with an accent on qualification requirements, prototyping, and hands-on testing. Focus on validating propulsion designs, optimizing payload capacity, and solving complex mechanical challenges across design, manufacturing, and vehicle integration.

Location: Auckland, New Zealand. New Zealand roles require nationality checks and eligibility to access equipment and data regulated by ITAR.

What you will do

  • Implement mechanical design solutions to reduce weight and increase propulsion performance for Electron.
  • Support the development and optimization of Rutherford engines and the Stage 3 propulsion system.
  • Help define propulsion-system qualification requirements and implement testing protocols.
  • Participate in hands-on prototyping and development activities.
  • Collaborate with mechanical design, propulsion, manufacturing engineering, and vehicle integration teams.
  • Own assigned tasks and projects, delivering results in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related engineering program.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Hands-on prototyping experience from engineering projects, laboratory research, internships, or relevant work.
  • Proactive communication skills and the ability to seek clarification and feedback.
  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally, manage tasks independently, and work under tight deadlines.
  • For New Zealand roles, eligibility to access ITAR-regulated equipment and data is required; background and nationality checks will be conducted before an offer.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge or interest in rocket propulsion systems.
  • Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks or NX.
  • Understanding of materials selection, structural analysis, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacturing.
  • Experience with testing and qualification methodologies.
  • Knowledge of aerospace materials and manufacturing techniques.
