TL;DR
Senior Avionics Systems Engineer - Electron (Avionics and aerospace systems): Developing and qualifying flight-ready avionics for the Electron launch vehicle with an accent on requirements management, hardware verification, environmental testing, and certification activities. Focus on investigating hardware faults, automating flight-data analysis, coordinating HITL and end-to-end testing, and preparing compliance documentation for NASA and FAA engagements.

Location: Auckland, New Zealand. For New Zealand roles, background and nationality checks are required, and access to ITAR-regulated equipment and data may be restricted based on citizenship or nationality.

What you will do

  • Manage avionics requirements, verification activities, software traceability, and standards compliance from design through flight.
  • Develop verification and control methods for avionics hardware and support launch operations through fault investigation, flight-data review, and corrective actions.
  • Lead component qualification, vibration, shock, thermal, TVAC, and failure-investigation activities.
  • Oversee hardware, procedures, and software requirements for hardware-in-the-loop and end-to-end testing at launch sites.
  • Automate pre- and post-flight data analysis and improve production, launch-operations, and test-infrastructure processes.
  • Interface with NASA and FAA on certification, mentor junior engineers, and provide technical guidance across hardware, software, manufacturing, and operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 2 years developing electronic systems through design, test, and qualification phases.
  • At least 2 years of systems-engineering experience managing requirements and verification activities.
  • Hands-on hardware-debugging skills and familiarity with oscilloscopes, power supplies, and multimeters.
  • Strong written communication skills for technical documentation, test plans, and regulatory submissions.
  • Ability to prioritize work independently and collaborate across hardware, software, manufacturing, and operations teams.

Nice to have

  • Experience with safety-critical or certified systems, avionics, medical devices, or automotive safety.
  • Knowledge of RCC-319, RCC-324, range-safety certification, flight-termination, RF, or pyrotechnic systems.
  • Experience with environmental qualification testing, launch campaigns, flight tests, or mission operations.
  • Python or MATLAB skills for test automation and data analysis, plus familiarity with Jama or DOORS.
  • Knowledge of electronics failure modes and root-cause analysis.
