Staff Electrical Engineer, Balance of Plant (BESS)

What you will do

• Design, model, and protect balance-of-plant electrical infrastructure for utility-scale BESS installations.
• Perform and review load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination, arc flash, transformer energization, motor starting, harmonic, grounding, and related power system studies.
• Develop AC and DC system models and study assumptions in collaboration with the energy storage team.
• Develop, validate, and maintain protective relay coordination studies, relay settings, and configuration files.
• Size and specify transformers, switchgear, breakers, inverters, generators, cables, UPS systems, and other major electrical equipment.
• Prepare engineering reports, study summaries, design documentation, and recommendations for internal and external stakeholders.

Requirements

• 3+ years of direct experience designing and commissioning PV and BESS systems.
• MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering with a power systems specialization.
• Strong knowledge of fault calculations, symmetrical components, arc flash calculations, cable sizing, and protective device coordination.
• Expert proficiency in ETAP is required; experience with SKM or EasyPower is preferred.
• Working knowledge of NEC, IEEE, ANSI, IEC, and related electrical industry practices.
• Ability to work occasional weekends, nights, on-call shifts, travel, and challenging environments involving noise, dust, chemicals, temperature extremes, and PPE.

Nice to have

• Experience with grounding and cable ampacity tools such as CYMCAP and CDEGS.
• Experience with BESS, inverter-based generation, or data center electrical systems.
• Familiarity with ASPEN, CAPE, PSCAD, PSS®E, or Python for analysis automation and data processing.
