TL;DR
Principal Engineer, Heat Transport System (Nuclear Energy): Designing and deploying KP-FHR nuclear heat recovery steam generator systems, including molten salt steam generators, salt pumps, valves, and auxiliary equipment with an accent on thermal systems integration, performance optimization, and regulatory readiness. Focus on developing system requirements and design documentation, qualifying suppliers and components, and commissioning and troubleshooting the NHRSG during plant startup.

Location: Alameda, CA; Albuquerque, NM; Oak Ridge, TN; remote options are indicated. The role may require up to 25% travel, schedule flexibility, and extended hours during testing and commissioning. Access to DOE Part 810-controlled information requires US work authorization or applicable DOE licensing.

Salary: $175,000–$218,000 annually for employees working onsite at the Alameda, California headquarters.

Company

hirify.global develops fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor technology for safe, affordable, and flexible clean-energy generation.

What you will do

  • Design and deploy the KP-FHR nuclear heat recovery steam generator, including molten salt steam generators, salt pumps, valves, and auxiliary systems.
  • Lead design trades, performance analyses, optimization, feasibility studies, and risk assessments for heat transport subsystems.
  • Integrate the NHRSG with plant structures, systems, components, and operations while managing interfaces and verification activities.
  • Coordinate external partners, suppliers, vendors, regulators, and technical deliverables.
  • Develop technical specifications, system requirements, design bases, interface documents, drawings, test plans, and verification/validation plans.
  • Support design reviews, supplier oversight, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and startup activities.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience designing and developing power conversion systems, particularly in nuclear or thermal power.
  • Experience deploying physical hardware in heat transfer systems and leading complex engineering projects or technical teams.
  • Experience evaluating, designing, and licensing new technology, as well as using requirements management, systems engineering, or design control processes.
  • Strong knowledge of heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, system integration, interface management, and verification/validation.
  • Must meet DOE Part 810 authorization requirements for access to controlled information; foreign nationals from countries outside the general authorization list may require a DOE export-control license.

Nice to have

  • Experience with molten salt or other high-temperature-fluid heat transport systems.
  • Experience with nuclear-specific or concentrating solar power applications.

Culture & Benefits

  • Collaborative environment with a strong nuclear safety culture.
  • Opportunity to build and mentor a small engineering team.
  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits for employees and dependents.
