TL;DR
Staff Mechanical Engineer (Manufacturing): Designing and developing custom mechanical and electrical production equipment for a large-scale rare-earth magnet manufacturing facility with an accent on CAD assemblies, manufacturing drawings, and equipment validation. Focus on leading FEA, thermal, and CFD analyses, supporting fabrication and commissioning, and integrating safety, DFM, and maintainability requirements.

Location: Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, United States; regular presence on the production floor is required. Local travel to fabrication shops is expected at less than 10%.

Company

hirify.global manufactures American rare-earth permanent magnets for critical defense, aerospace, and automotive applications.

What you will do

  • Lead the mechanical and electrical design of custom manufacturing equipment for rare-earth magnet production.
  • Translate pilot-line processes into production-ready machinery and collaborate with fabrication and machine shops throughout the build.
  • Source components, manage lead times, review build quality, and provide on-floor support during assembly, wiring, and initial testing.
  • Perform stress, thermal, and fluid-flow simulations to validate equipment for demanding industrial environments.
  • Partner with Process, Quality, and Operations teams on design reviews, DFM, safety, environmental, ergonomic, and maintainability requirements.
  • Develop equipment documentation including CAD assemblies, manufacturing and electrical drawings, pneumatic drawings, BOMs, risk assessments, PFMEA inputs, and maintenance documentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical discipline with 7+ years of experience, or a master’s degree with 5+ years of experience.
  • Expert-level experience with complex CAD equipment assemblies using tools such as SolidWorks or Inventor, including detailed 2D manufacturing drawings and GD&T.
  • Experience leading both mechanical design and electrical design, including frames, mechanisms, actuators, panel layouts, schematics, and sensor integration.
  • Hands-on experience with stress, thermal, and fluid-flow simulations for design validation.
  • Experience working with external fabrication shops, weldments, finishes, vendors, and tight engineering tolerances.
  • Must be a U.S. Person due to access to U.S. export-controlled information or facilities.

Nice to have

  • Experience with heavy industrial manufacturing equipment, high-vacuum systems, or high-temperature processing equipment.
  • Manual machining or welding experience.
  • Familiarity with motion control hardware, servos, and basic PLC integration.
  • Experience in defense, aerospace, or automotive industries and related standards.

Culture & Benefits

  • Mission-focused work supporting national security and economic resiliency.
  • Regular production-floor work in hot, humid, or noisy industrial environments.
  • Required use of PPE, including respirators, and completion of fit testing.
  • Ability to climb stairs and stand or walk for extended periods is required.
  • Work must follow applicable safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
