TL;DR
Powertrain Responsible Engineer (Hypersonic Aircraft): Owns the design, analysis, testing, qualification, and production introduction of gearboxes, pumps, motors, generators, and turbomachinery for hypersonic vehicles with an accent on interdisciplinary mechanical, fluid, thermal, materials, and manufacturing engineering. Focus on architecting critical flight hardware, building test infrastructure, defining operational limits, and solving reliability and safety challenges through production and flight testing.

Location: Los Angeles, CA, United States; on-site

Salary: $91,800–$187,450 per year, depending on level and experience.

What you will do

  • Own critical flight hardware and the mechanical components and assemblies that generate and transmit fluid, mechanical, and electrical power.
  • Architect, place, size, design, analyze, test, qualify, and introduce components into production.
  • Design and build gearboxes, pumps, motors, generators, and related powertrain hardware for hypersonic aircraft.
  • Develop testing infrastructure to validate, accept, and qualify novel designs.
  • Define vehicle-level operational methods and limits to support reliability and personnel safety.
  • Work with systems and manufacturing teams to integrate designs and establish production infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, aerospace, physics, materials, or a related engineering discipline.
  • CAD experience designing parts and assemblies.
  • At least 3 years of engineering, competition-team, or applied-research experience related to fluid or engine systems.
  • Strong interest in hardware design and development.
  • Willingness to travel for hardware and flight tests and to work extended hours or weekends when needed.
  • Must qualify as a U.S. person under U.S. export-control regulations or be eligible for deemed-export licensing.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree in an engineering discipline and 5+ years of hardware development experience from concept through production.
  • Experience with gear design, bearing design, rotordynamics, thermodynamics, mechanics, materials, GD&T, and stack-up analysis.
  • Script programming experience with Python, Matlab, Excel, or VBA.
  • Experience with pressurized fluid components, Siemens NX, Teamcenter, or ANSYS.
  • Ability to execute effectively in an entrepreneurial environment with tight timelines.
