Functional Safety Engineer (Energy Storage)

What you will do

• Lead functional safety compliance activities for energy storage systems, including UL 1998, UL 991, and UL 5500.
• Apply functional safety principles to ESS hardware and software and lead FMEA, hazard analysis, safety case, and test strategy development.
• Manage certification programs with NRTLs and support timely approvals for new technologies and product launches.
• Translate complex safety standards into actionable requirements for engineering, manufacturing, and product design teams.
• Develop and execute hazard mitigation, validation, testing, and verification strategies.
• Represent Redwood in standards development activities and collaborate with certification bodies and industry partners.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
• Hands-on experience with embedded software in safety-critical or regulated environments, preferably with microcontroller-based systems.
• Proficiency in C for real-time embedded systems.
• Strong knowledge of UL 1998, UL 991, and UL 5500.
• Experience with energy storage systems, power electronics, or other safety-critical systems.
• Experience applying functional safety methodologies and managing third-party compliance or certification processes.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with IEC 61508, IEC/UL 60730, ISO 26262, or ISO 13849.
• Experience with low-level software or firmware development.
• Passion for sustainability and energy transition technologies.
