Protection & Controls Engineer

Location: Miami, FL, United States; full-time in-office role. Travel of approximately 20–35% is required for factory tests, energizations, and utility meetings.

What you will do

• Develop and review protection schemes, relay panel arrangements, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, logic diagrams, and controls designs for high-voltage substations and interconnection facilities.
• Specify protective relays, RTUs, meters, and panel equipment in accordance with utility, NERC, IEEE, and ANSI requirements.
• Develop and manage relay settings files, setting philosophies, version control, and reconciliation between issued settings, as-left settings, and study models.
• Perform and validate protection coordination, fault, and arc-flash studies using ASPEN or CAPE.
• Coordinate utility protection requirements, review packages, SCADA/RTU point lists, witness testing, and energization acceptance.
• Support factory and site acceptance testing, relay functional testing, end-to-end testing, commissioning, construction, and real-time troubleshooting.

Requirements

• 5+ years of protection and controls engineering experience for high-voltage substations, transmission systems, or utility interconnections from 69kV to 345kV.
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering; a PE license is preferred.
• Strong experience with protective relaying, including SEL platforms, scheme design, settings development, and event analysis.
• Fluency in protection coordination and fault studies using ASPEN or CAPE, with the ability to defend settings to utilities.
• Working knowledge of NERC PRC standards, utility interconnection protection processes, relay testing, end-to-end testing, and NETA field operations.
• Rigorous documentation practices and willingness to travel 20–35% for factory tests, energizations, and utility meetings.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with SCADA/RTU systems and communications-assisted protection, including mirrored bits and fiber schemes.
• PE license.
