Protection & Controls Engineer

Location: On-site in Memphis, Tennessee, United States; this is not a remote or hybrid role. Travel up to 25% to other sites, factories, vendors, and OEMs.

What you will do

• Design protection philosophies, electrical diagrams, control schematics, wiring diagrams, and relay panel layouts for high- and medium-voltage infrastructure.
• Calculate, implement, and maintain protective relay settings and logic for transmission lines, buses, transformers, feeders, generators, and battery energy storage systems.
• Specify relays, instrument transformers, trip circuits, lockout schemes, breaker-failure protection, and communications-assisted protection schemes.
• Perform short-circuit, protective-device coordination, and arc-flash studies, keeping relay settings aligned with the study of record.
• Commission protection systems using functional checks, primary and secondary injection, end-to-end testing, and in-service timing checks.
• Analyze fault and disturbance records, maintain settings and firmware configuration controls, integrate protection with SCADA and plant monitoring, and support field teams during outages and troubleshooting.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or another engineering discipline.
• At least 3 years of protection and controls experience involving settings, design, or commissioning on medium- or high-voltage systems.
• Experience with protective relays, relay logic, settings management, electrical studies, and commissioning test equipment.
• Knowledge of SCADA and protection communications, including DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850, GOOSE, and IEEE C37.118.
• Ability to perform hands-on field work in hazardous environments, work extended hours and weekends, provide 24/7 emergency on-call support, and lift up to 25 lbs.
• Willingness to work on-site in Memphis, Tennessee and hold a valid driver's license.

Nice to have

• 5+ years in a protection and controls role at a utility, independent power producer, EPC, relay manufacturer, hyperscale data center, or colocation operator.
• Experience with SEL relays and software, including AcSELerator QuickSet and synchroWAVe Event; GE, ABB, Siemens, or Beckwith experience is also valued.
• Experience with ETAP, ASPEN OneLiner, CAPE, SKM, or EasyPower.
• Professional Engineering license or active progress toward one.
